Hello 2009!

Riverdale Farm, Toronto. Photo by Kenn Chaplin

Well, Happy New Years, folks! I hope that the Eve was pleasant for everyone, and that the hangovers are not too bad *winks*

As for me, it was a quiet evening at home with the better half, drinking a few yummy Scottish ales, eating homemade pizza, and watching a movie. We also started discussing some plans for 2009.

We are figuring out how we as two apartment dwellers (somewhere between urban and suburban) that are quasi-homesteaders, can become more self-sufficient.

We are hopefully going to finish up the planning part this weekend, where myself as the typical Aquarius will come up with some flighty ideas, and him the typical Aries will come up with realistic ways to make those ideas come to fruition.

In 2008 I have come across more awesome resources for homesteaders, which I have added to my own personal list. Here are my favourite 2008 discoveries (in alphabetical order):

Blogs
Cold Antler Farm
Little City Farm
Poor Richard's Alamanac

Websites
Homestead.org
Path to Freedom
Small Farm/Permaculture

Bulletin Boards
Homesteading Today
Prepared Society

Videos
Garden Girl
Pockets of the Future

Magazines
Alive and Fit
Backwoods Home

Books
Made from Scratch by Jenna Woginrich
The Complete Homesteading Book by David Robinson

If you have any favourites that are not listed here, please feel free to leave them in the comments or email them!

Well, I am off to get another cup of coffee and do some more daydreaming.

All the best for you folks in 2009~

Sláinte!

Bless you, Laurel! We are thrilled and honored that Poor Richard's Almanac made it onto your list! We hope to have even more homestead- and small-scale self-sufficiency posts on our blog in 2009. And you've listed some resources we're going to have to check out! Many, many thanks!!! Incidentally, are you aware of Granny Miller's blog? "Granny's" homesteading skills are pretty intimidating, but they're definitely awesome. I, er, can't remember if she's grannymiller.blogspot.com or how one gets to her, but there's a link in our blogroll and it's definitely worth a click! Having finally mastered great homemade pizza-making myself (after umpteen zillion tries, pizza being one of our favorites), I think pizza and a movie sounds like a great way to ring in the new year! We had salad, baked potatoes, homemade dressing, and mixed green and yellow wax beans with our movie---ironically (in retrospect), "12 Monkeys," which neither of us had seen. Let's hope that 2009 brings bright blessings and unexpected gifts to all of us!
